Legal residence in Iceland, citizens of EEA and EFTA member states

Citizens of EEA and EFTA* states may come to Iceland without a special permit and stay or work in Iceland for up to three months before registering legal residence and six months if the person is looking for employment. After that period it is necessary to register at Registers Iceland, if conditions regarding support are met.

Everyone who stays or intends to stay in Iceland for six months or more shall according to law have a legal residence in Iceland. The right for public service and support is generally dependent on the fact that the person in question has a registered legal residence and therefore it is suggested that legal residence is registered as soon as possible, if the person intends to stay in Iceland. The condition of support needs to be met to be able to register in the National Registry.
