Everyone who stays, or intend to stay in Iceland for six months or longer, is required by law to have legal domicile in Iceland.

The right to public services and support is generally dependant on the person in question having registered legal domicile in Iceland. Therefore it is recommended that you register your legal domicile as soon as possible, if you intend to stay in Iceland.

In order to register your legal domicile with Registers Iceland you must be able to demonstrate that you can support yourself financially.

  • Legal domicile must be in a house registered as residential housing in the real estate registry. You cannot register your legal domicile in a hostel, hospital, work camp or other similar types of housing.
  • You can only have legal domicile at one location.
  • Everyone who has a registered domicile is registered in the National Registry.

You need to keep in mind that an ID No. and registration of a legal domicile are not the same thing and even though you have an Icelandic ID No., this does not necessarily mean that you have registered your legal domicile in Iceland.
